AP: New Mexico oil regulators aim to limit seismic activity

New Mexico oil and gas regulators are watching closely as increased seismic activity is being reported in the Permian Basin along the Texas state line. In addition to 16 existing injection wells, the division currently has 72 pending applications for disposal wells within 10 miles of the area of concern.

US News & World Report: Risk of Quakes Caused by Oil, Gas in New Mexico Rising

Multiple earthquakes were felt earlier this fall in West Texas, leading regulators in that state to designate a seismic response area and call for less wastewater from oil and gas development to be injected in disposal wells.

IS THE PERMIAN “GLASS” HALF-FULL OF PRODUCED WATER?

The cumulative permitted disposal capacity for the thousands of actively injecting wells in the TX Permian is estimated to be just over 51 million bpd. However, the operational capacity is only around 31 million bpd, a massive 40% less than permitted capacity. Operational capacity is also about 40% less than permitted capacity in both the Midland and Delaware Basins. This paints a picture of a Permian Basin less able to dispose of its water.
