Some of the funding will be used by the EERC to study the potential for extracting the minerals from produced water, which is wastewater that is a byproduct of oil and gas production. The EERC will also seek to better understand the accumulations of and potential for extracting critical minerals in oil and gas reservoirs as well as those in drill cuttings, another byproduct of petroleum development, said Reice Haase, the Industrial Commission's deputy executive director.

“We got better data on how much is generated each year,” Fuge said during the meeting at Southeast New Mexico College in Carlsbad. “Because produced water is a byproduct, it tracks pretty well with oil and gas that is produced.”

This includes Proposition 6. If approved, this resolution would create a new special fund in the state treasury outside of the general revenue fund, endowed with a $1 billion down payment. The fund would be administered by the Texas Water Development Board to support a wide range of projects including fixing Texas’ aging, deteriorating pipes, acquiring more water sources and mitigating water loss.

Caliber Midstream reported two separate pipeline spills in McKenzie County on both Tuesday, Oct. 3, and Wednesday, Oct. 4. The volume of the Tuesday spill has risen to 60,732 gallons.
