What did the Permian Basin look like when all its rocks were being deposited?
The thickening of the Earth's crust due to mountain building causes "foreland basins" to form adjacent to these ranges as the crust subsides in response to the weight of the mountains. This subsidence creates the basins into which sedimentary rocks are deposited. It was this mechanism that caused the Midland and Delaware Basins to drop!
